January 10th Service

Greetings to you on this the Lord’s day.  Today, we join together with other faithful believers and celebrate the Baptism of the Lord Sunday.  We give thanks for the ministry which Jesus is about to begin and the gift of the Holy Spirit which descended on Him like a dove.

Melicent Huneycutt a former Christian educator and PCUS missionary to Korea and associate pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Evanston, Ill says this about the Holy Spirit.  “Most Biblical images vivifying the person and work of the Spirit are images of life. The Spirit is life-giver, life-nurturer, the life surging in the creation and growth of human personality. Paraclete, the Greek name by which Jesus introduced the Holy Spirit, who was to walk beside and dwell within believers, is translated to express warm and growth-enhancing qualities: Comforter, Counselor, Advocate, Helper, Partner.”

This past week we have seen violence, hatred raging, and division in our nation, as well the highest numbers on record for daily Covid-19 cases and deaths in our country.  We are trying to stay safe, but know more and more people who have contracted Covid-19 and so many who are suffering greatly from the disease.  On top of all of that there are even more suffering from other medical conditions and others trying to survive despite loss of income and work.  The world seems even darker now and we need the Holy Spirit now more than ever.  We need the part of God that is our comforter, helper, and partner in life.  Let us never forget that even on the darkest of days God is with us.
